Tax time delivered a double whammy this year. Not only do I owe taxes, but the deduction for charitable contributions has been effectively rendered obsolete. All of the wonderful people who donate to my little charity can no longer deduct the gift, unless they itemize on Schedule A. Most of us poor folk take the standard deduction.
Don’t shoot the messenger!
Quoted straight from the IRS:
“Charitable contributions for non-itemizers. The temporary deduction for charitable cash contributions for taxpayers who do not itemize their tax returns has expired and is no longer available . . .
Schedule A (Form 1040) required. Generally, to deduct a charitable contribution, you must itemize deductions on Schedule A (Form 1040).”
What that really means is that small non-profits like the Funny Farm could lose a lot of donations. You can still donate, but there is no tax deduction for most of us. The big guys, like the Red Cross, will be okay. My small organization is completely dependent upon small donors who appreciate what we do. So we will be getting creative with our fundraising.
