Rodent enthusiasts have been reading about these rats for a long time. They are trained to sniff out land mines, and their flawless sniffers and light weight mean that they can safely find mines so that they can be marked and removed. Besides the obvious improved safety to the neighborhood, it frequently opens up farm land that hasn’t been cultivated for decades, providing an economic boost to the community.
Reading about these big rats, I noticed for the first time that they can also be trained to sniff out tuberculosis! They really are amazing.
