My friend Frank went to Nagasaki Biopark to see their famous capybaras, but it turns out they have other animals, too! Let’s see if we can figure out what these other animals are.
There’s something special about meerkats. They are almost as cute as rodents and can be counted on to provide an entertaining show.
How about an authentic rodent, then? Here’s a beaver, the second-largest rodent.
There’s a lot of swimming in the following video, and you can see that magnificent tail.
Frank saw some other swimmers, like these turtles. They are Red-Eared Sliders, like our very own Dr. Pepper, who is hibernating brumating at the moment. When he emerges in spring he looks like the crusty muddy one below. Dr. Pepper is an invasive species, and that is why he is here.
Then there are these incredible diving beetles. According to Wikipedia, they eat tadpoles, so not vegetarians. They are busy guys!
If you like bugs, check this out! It looks like this mantis just emerged from his cocoon ootheca. If this isn’t a mantis, let me know. The Biopark website isn’t very helpful with this one.
How about some birds? These are Macaws. They are native to South America, Central America, and Mexico. Look at those long tails! They are spectacular flyers and really get your attention in their native habitat.

Here are a couple more treetop animals, a scruffy hairy one, and a slick tidy package.

For some reason, there are a bunch of animals with striped tails. Below we have a Common Marmoset, Ring-Tailed Lemur, and Coatimundi. In the video, there are raccoons, too!

Let’s take a break and look at a familiar domestic animal. How about a nice pony? Uh oh, he bites.
I’ll take my chances with these Brazilian tapirs, instead.
We must be getting close to the capybara area! Popsicle time!

Don’t miss the capybara video! You can find it in last month’s blogpost.
